CONTEXT

As part of a workshop at Les Ateliers Éclairés in Strasbourg, we were asked to create a projection mapping experience designed specifically for a skateboarding structure we had to build ourselves. The goal was to produce a one-minute video combining live footage, projections, and motion design to create an immersive and visually engaging narrative.

CHALLENGE

The project involved several layers of complexity. First, we had a very tight timeline to complete everything—from concept to final projection. Second, we had to learn and integrate technical tools like TouchDesigner and MadMapper, which were new to many of us. Finally, we needed to ensure that the visuals interacted seamlessly with the skaters in real time, requiring both technical precision and strong coordination between teams.

SOLUTION

We overcame these challenges through clear team organization and a strong visual direction. I was personally in charge of designing the visuals and handling the real-time projection software. Using Syphon to bridge TouchDesigner and MadMapper, we managed to align our content with the structure’s geometry. Visually, we leaned into a retro, grunge aesthetic inspired by 2000s skate videos, using fisheye lenses and textured overlays to enhance the vibe and fully immerse the viewer.
