CONTEXT
The NL Contest is an international urban sports event (skateboarding, BMX, scooter…) held annually in Strasbourg. To celebrate the event’s 20th anniversary, I participated in a group project to design a booklet and augmented reality stickers. The goal was to offer an interactive and educational experience highlighting the urban cultures represented at the festival.
CHALLENGE
The project was built around four main themes: streetball, breakdance, graffiti, and DJing. Each theme was represented by a sticker paired with an augmented animation. The main challenge was to create a strong, cohesive graphic identity while making animation easier. We chose a simple illustration style, with bold lines and exaggerated proportions to emphasize movement. The animation process required us to carefully separate each character into multiple layers — a time-consuming task since the illustrations were created in Procreate without pre-separated elements.
SOLUTION
I personally created the simple animation of the DJ and the basketball player, as well as the interactive animation between the basketball player and the dancer, which activates when both stickers are scanned together. I used After Effects and its Puppet Tool, along with the Duik Angela plugin, to rig and animate the characters more efficiently. This collaborative project allowed us to blend motion design, illustration, and augmented reality into a dynamic, playful, and engaging experience that celebrates urban culture in a fresh and interactive format.
